Snow White is one of the most popular fairy tales known in many versions across the world. The brothers Grimm published it in 1812 in the first edition of their collection of fairy tales Kinder- und Hausmärchen, better known as Grimm's Fairy Tales. The origin of Grimm's fairy tales collection that became one of their major pieces of work can be traced in the year 1806 when the brothers lived in seclusion after their graduation. Encouraged by Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano they took up collecting fairy tales. Their famous collection of fairy tales is not the product of their imagination; it was collected and compiled as well as rewritten and restructured following the oral tradition of the old tales. Snow White was published under the title Schneewittchen and numbered as tale 53. There exist no less than eight versions of the tale, but the final version was completed in 1854 and is known as their best fairy tale. In the Broadway production Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs from 1912, the dwarfs were first given individual names. The most famous version of Snow White is probably a 1937 cartoon Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs by Walt Disney.

Snow White is a fairy tale dealing with the opposition between the good and the evil and the final triumph of the good. The Queen accidentally pricks her finger with a needle while sewing, and upon seeing three droplets of blood falling onto the snow, she wishes for a baby. Her wish is granted, and Snow White is born. Soon after giving birth, the Queen dies and Snow White gets a vain and wicked stepmother who wants to be the prettiest in the world, so she asks her mirror every day who is the fairest in the land. Until Snow White grows up, the mirror keeps replying that the Queen is the fairest in the land. But when Snow White grows into a beautiful young girl, the mirror replies that the fairest in the land is Snow White. The stepmother is so outraged that she orders a huntsman to take Snow White into the woods to be killed. As proof that Snow White is dead, the Queen demands that he returns with her lungs and liver. The huntsman takes pity on Snow White and allows her to flee deeper into the woods, thinking she will become prey to wild beasts. Deep in the forest, however, Snow White finds new friends: seven dwarves who offer her a home. In spite of the proof brought by the huntsman, the mirror still replies to the stepmother that the fairest in the land is Snow White. So the stepmother goes into the woods on her own in order to get rid of her stepdaughter. In the end, the stepmother's vanity and malice are punished and the good conquers the evil, and Snow White lives happily ever after with a prince.
The fairy tale about the evil stepmother and the brave girl who finds her own way in the unknown world brings forth to the young audience an ever topical question of the opposition between the good and the evil and the triumph of positive characters and everything good against the evil and corruption.
These days many children do not grow up in safe and happy families, and this is the reason why they need fairy tales. The characters in fairy tales step into the world and conquer any difficulty with a firm conviction. The destiny of such characters reassures children that in spite of their feeling lonely and lost, they will find the right path in their life, since life will provide them with right directions. As long as they keep faith in themselves and stay committed to their decisions, they could be winners.
